How Did We Get Here?
Anyone looking to surrender their current pet rabbit to an area rescue may be frustrated by the process. It may seem like no one can take them in. At our rescue, our rabbits typically come from three different types of bad situations:
- Dumped bunnies. We take in many stray rabbits. These rabbits have been let go outside by their owners. Unlike the cottontails that are native to the area, pet rabbits are descendants of European rabbits and have been bred for centuries into the pet rabbits we have today. Pet rabbits are not able to survive on their own in the wild. They do not have the skills to do so. However, we see many dumped rabbits and there is always a waiting list for rabbits rescued outside waiting in foster homes with Good Samaritans until a rescue has a space for them.
- Accidental litters. Rabbits breed quickly starting at a young age. A rabbit can start having litters when she is only 3-4 months old. Rabbits can have litters every month, each litter containing up to 14 babies (Source). If two rabbits live together or have access to each other and have not been spayed or neutered (or have been sexed wrong- thinking you have two males or two females when you actually have one male and one female), two rabbits can very quickly become a multitude of rabbits. We often take in rabbits from these accidental litters. It is extremely important to ensure your rabbits are sexed properly and to neuter or spay each rabbit. Not only does neutering and spaying prevent accidental litters, it also prevents cancers as rabbits age.
- Meat rabbits. Large-breed rabbits can still be purchased at some farm stores in the area. Sometimes people purchase these rabbits with the intention of breeding them for food. However, this does not always work out as they are cute and sweet and it is difficult to follow through! That means that the rabbits need to find a place to live where they are wanted as pets. Several Wonder Bunnies have come from this type of situation.
